Welcome to R/V Cape Hattaras Blog

R/V Cape Hatteras

I will be updating this blog throughout my 10 days away on the research cruise off of the cape. I've been assigned to process samples from the seabed group, which means I'll be labeling and storing a lot of debris from the ocean floor.

We'll be investigating the natural conditions at a point on the continental shelf off the shore of North Carolina that is being considered for offshore drilling. Our research is important because within a few years it's drilling may open up and greatly alter the marine environment.

My adviser, Professor Jonathan Wisniewski, has been making preparations for this cruise since he blocked out the time on the Hattaras nearly a year ago, began filling the slots for research staff, etc. This week, we've already begun assembling our necessary gear for the trip. I'll be making my next post on Sept. 1 when we will be setting out on the cruise.
